SAMH Leadership Changes

The Society of Ancient Military Historians, would like to acknowledge the passing of leadership that occurred at this year’s annual meeting of the Society for Military History in Arlington Virginia. The Society is grateful to Prof. Lee L. Brice for his tenure at the helm as President and look forward to his role as the Society’s Book Review Editor going forward. Prof. Jonathan Roth has returned as President. Dr. Benjamin Sullivan, currently a visiting professor at Cornell University, is stepping in as the Vice President of the Society. The SAMH is grateful to everyone for their service past and future within the Society. We will include more information in the upcoming June Res Militares about the spring conferences and continued growth of the Society of Ancient Military Historians.

Guest Speaker Opportunity at Virginia Military Institute

Virginia Military Institute

The Virginia Military Institute’s Department of History sponsors a World history lecture twice a year.  The lecture series is an enrichment experience for our freshman, who are required to take World History I & II as part of their Core Curriculum requirements.  The fall semester’s lecture is usually on a topic from the ancient or medieval worlds. We have had several notable ancient historians and classicists come to speak to our Post including Josiah Ober, Jack Cargill, James Romm, Cecil Wooten, Adrian Goldsworthy and others. Although the topic does not necessarily have to be a military one, our cadets are particularly interested in ancient armies.  Rather than try to contact each member of the SAMH separately, we thought placing an announcement in the newsletter might attract potential speakers who are available in the fall semester and might be interested in coming to Lexington, VA.  We can offer travel expenses, a guest room, dinner with our faculty, and a small honorarium. If you are interested, please contact:  Col. Rose Mary Sheldon (rms@vmi.edu) or LTC Timothy Dowling (dowlingtc@vmi.edu), Department of History, Virginia Military Institute, Lexington, VA 24450.

The SAMH is back!

Welcome to the new Official Homepage of the Society of Ancient Military Historians!

The Society of Ancient Military Historians is an organization dedicated to the promotion of the study of military history and warfare in the Ancient World. Members sponsor and contribute to the publication of our newsletter, Res Militares (Due Early June 2011). Our leadership works with and within the American Philological Association and the Association of Ancient Historians to disseminate information of interest to members and arrange contact between our members and within the larger academic community.

Dan Powers, SAMH Secretary, invites members and anyone else interested in military history to offer submissions of conference announcements, calls for papers, public lectures, publication announcements, and related events for the next issue of our newsletter.  In Addition, Dan is also trying to collect digital copies of all past issues of Res Militares for the official archive that will be available through the website.  Any other documents related to SAMH (Previous Meeting Notes, Constitution, or other items) will be greatly appreciated. Please contact us if you have any of these documents or past issues of Res Militares that you can provide for the Society.  We will also be starting a section of book reviews in the near future so please send any books for review to the conventional addresses on this page. Contact may be with Dan Powers via email:          dan.powers@utah.edu or via the conventional addresses listed on this page.
